Another African country is about to join the rank of failed states.

There are 54 nation states in Africa.

Of these, the vast majority were colonized by Britain, France, Spain and Portugal.

The likes of Ethiopia and Liberia are unique in the sense that they weren’t colonized by the countries listed above; the former had to contend with Mussolini’s Italy for a short while in the 1930s, but that was as brief as it got.

Nearly all African nation states are made up of disparate tribes. The heterogeneity of these entities have made their internal cohesion quite weak.

And It is also pertinent to point out that the business of imperialism paid very little attention to cohesiveness of these groups. All that mattered was harnessing the resources of these places for maximum gain.

The harnessing of these resources has led to a massive pay day for these European nations.

Portugal and France owe their wealth to Angola, Mozambique, Senegal, Cameroon, Mali, and Ivory Coast. It is fair to state that without their colonies, these countries are nothing more than third world nations.
