Are There Too Many Good Writers on Medium?
Or is it a profoundly biased algorithm?
Writers are like LLCs — limited liability companies.
As with all LLCs, the goals are to survive, thrive and ultimately to dominate. Some do, others don’t and the rest keep trying.
I don’t imagine that when Denning, Haque, Wildfire and Ashley started out writing here, that they did so with the target of being market leaders and oligopolies.
But over time, they worked their way to the very top of the pyramid by consistently generating highly qualitative material.
And when the partnership program became a phenomenon, they reaped the benefits of being the most prominent players here.
Once their established status was challenged by the new pretenders, these old players took it very badly; some wrote angry pieces protesting their plummeting wages and others simply jumped ship.
But it is interesting to note that some of those who jumped ship have since returned to our beloved space, fully cognizant of the fact that they would have to share the limelight — and spoils — with the disrespectful new folks.
And it is against the backdrop of the fight for money (yes, it’s all about money) among all writers operating on Medium that we were told a few weeks ago that…
