The last few weeks have been quite extraordinary.

And no, I am not talking about the state of the global economy or the recently held general elections.

If you’re an ardent football fan, you will have found the last few weeks packed with so much sporting activity.

There’s the Copa America, which has been quite enthralling and one which has also featured the three leading nations of North American football — The United States, Canada and Mexico.

We have seen the greatest footballer of our generation, Lionel Messi, dragging his country to the finals of the competition and we have also seen perennial favourites —Brazil —crash out to Uruguay, who were beaten by the Colombians.

But all this has paled by comparison to what we have seen in Germany.

The England national team, which is currently participating in the quadrennial European competition, has managed to stay the course and play in Sunday’s final match, despite performing quite poorly.

In the group games, we stuttered to victory by a lone goal against the Serbians and struggled quite badly against the Danes and the Slovenians.
