Recent midterm elections have not been good to the Democrats.

One is old enough to remember the events of November 1994, when Bill Clinton squandered great political capital on the don’t ask, don’t tell policy along with his wife’s handling of the healthcare expansion initiative. The failure of these policies led to a massive beating at the polls; a loss which was directly responsible for the rise of Newt Gingrich and the subsequent appointment of Kenneth Starr, the independent prosecutor whose work led to Clinton’s impeachment.

Barack Obama didn’t fare any better.

Even though America’s first Black President was able to go a step further than his Democratic predecessor in passing the affordable care act (ACA) legislation, his very presence as a man of colour in the country’s highest position made him a lightening rod for white evangelicals, far right activists, nativists, conspiracy theorists and all other lunatics, who believed White Americans had become the minority in America.

This unholy alliance was responsible for the irresistible rise of the Tea Party and the right wing push back in 2009.
