Recent midterm elections have not been good to the Democrats.

One is old enough to remember the events of November 1994, when Bill Clinton squandered great political capital on the don’t ask, don’t tell policy along with his wife’s handling of the healthcare expansion initiative. The failure of these policies led to a massive beating at the polls; a loss which was directly responsible for the rise of Newt Gingrich and the subsequent appointment of Kenneth Starr, the independent prosecutor whose work led to Clinton’s impeachment.

Barack Obama didn’t fare any better.

Even though America’s first Black President was able to go a step further than his Democratic predecessor in passing the affordable care act (ACA) legislation, his very presence as a man of colour in the country’s highest position made him a lightening rod for white evangelicals, far right activists, nativists, conspiracy theorists and all other lunatics, who believed White Americans had become the minority in America.

This unholy alliance was responsible for the irresistible rise of the Tea Party and the right wing push back in 2009.

Needless to say that Obama’s legislative agenda unraveled with his ‘shellacking’ at the polls in 2010.

For the most experienced incumbent ever to occupy the white house, the travails of his forebears has not been lost at all on our man and Biden has been quite careful and meticulous in moving forward with the radical bits of his domestic agenda.

The pace of the soon to be octogenarian president has been quite infuriating to those on the left of the party, who want to see radical changes happen immediately.

Owing to his years on the job, the leader of the free world is all too aware of the degree to which the public are fickle and forgetful and given that he is all too keen to avoid the mid-term fate of Clinton and Obama, the president has kept his trump card to his chest, until now.

And what might that be?

Student loan forgiveness.
