It goes without saying that Muhammad Ali is the greatest boxer of all time.

When you think of the extraordinary cast of characters which the great sport has produced in the last century: Gene Tunney, Archie Moore, Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis, Sonny Liston, Rocky Marciano, George Foreman, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson and not forgetting Jack Johnson and yet it must be stated that not one of these figures come close to the man formerly known as Cassius Clay.

But for all of his extraordinary brilliance in and out of the boxing ring, which took in some of the seminal events of our time, and by this, I am referring to the Vietnam war, the civil rights struggle and the spate of political assassinations —MLK, JFK, Malcolm X — our hero succumbed to the maxim that ‘all great careers end in failure’.

Boxing aficionados will remember the Ali fights against Trevor Berbick, Leon Spinks and his former sparring partner —Larry Holmes.

In the fight against Holmes, you were left with the distinct impression that we were witnessing the onset of Ali’s Parkinson’s disease and his extraordinary physical decline.
