Boris Johnson: Britain’s Worst Ever Premier
At the heart of everything that has gone wrong in Britain today, lies its political leader.
John Major was Prime Minister from November 1990 till May 1997.
During his time in charge of the United Kingdom, he was pilloried by the press for a number of reasons. Chief among them was his working class background (was born in Brixton to a highly impoverished father), his limited education (GED) and the great difficulties he had with his party in resolving the fraught issue of Europe and not to mention the number of scandals that his cabinet members were involved in.
But the intervening years have been incredibly kind to the man who spoke of “a classless society at ease with itself”.
These days, when people talk about Margaret Thatcher’s immediate successor, they point to his great initiative, with great fondness — the national lottery — which has become a staple of British life since 1996. Something that has directly led to Britain’s phenomenal successes at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympic games.
It did seem for a while that the Conservatives were never going to get the chance to ever govern in Britain again, until Gordon Brown made a complete mess of things. Even then, the route to power for the Tories only came by way of a coalition with the Liberal Democrats in 2010.
