The parallels with Adolf Hitler are quite striking.
Germany in 1918 was on the losing side of the great war. And being on the losing side came at a great price, economically and politically.
Huge indemnities were imposed by the victors of the great war — Italy, France, Great Britain and The United States of America — on the losing side. Suffice it to say that Germany pursued the wrong economic policies in the aftermath of the first world war, which made it impossible to pay its huge debts.
Not too long afterwards hyperinflation became a reality for millions of Germans, leading to its unravelling and the inexorable rise of the National Socialist Party and Adolf Hitler.
And we all know how that panned out.
But given our propensity for amnesia and complacency, it’s worth reminding all would be readers of this post.
First it was Poland, who fell, and then one after the other, countries which had declared their neutrality soon became overrun by the Nazis. The French, who alongside Britain declared war on Germany also became an occupied state.
