Rule Britannia.

The British empire was meant to last forever.

It was Winston Churchill who said that he was never going to preside over the liquidation of the British empire.

And the process of the disintegration began shortly after the war time prime minister was kicked out by the British electorate in 1945 and once India won its independence in 1947, there was no looking back with Ghana, Nigeria, the Gambia, Singapore, Malaysia, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Uganda and the rest electing to break away from the empire on which the sun was never meant to set.

And there began Britain’s very long mental illness.

In the 1960s, it made a half-hearted attempt to join the European Union, which was then known as the European Economic Community, which Charles de Gaulle turned down because he thought that the United Kingdom was much more wedded to the United States of America than to European unity.

But by the 1970s, it had begun to unravel on a massive scale with the unions going to war with Ted Heath’s government — something which led to the three day week, when much of the country was literally in the dark.
