These things need to be said
Far more than any other country on earth, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is schitzophrenically obsessed with class.
The circumstances into which you were born determine how far you will go in life. If you were born on a council estate in Wythenshawe in Manchester, chances are high that you will leave school with few qualifications, not because you are unintelligent and lazy, but because you are grappling with years of systemic under investment in the local schools, hospitals, and community centers etc.
Now if you were born in a place like Chartwell or Notting Hill — incredibly salubrious neighbourhoods — your life chances are much infinitely higher of attending decent schools and having access to better hospitals and libraries, which set you on the path to succeeding in life.
when we factor into the equation that only 7% of the British population are privately educated and yet vastly over represented at the nation’s top universities — Oxford and Cambridge — then you start to have an idea of how difficult it is for kids raised in the wrong parts of town to forge ahead, however clever, driven and talented.
