For millions of folks in this isles, what took place a few days ago was simply beyond extraordinary.

It was a hark back to the ugly days, when my parents took careful and calculated steps in not going to places which were openly hostile to people of colour.

And a timely reminder that the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a profoundly racist country.

But we cannot judge what we have seen in isolation; it has to be viewed in the context of what’s currently happening in Gaza and in the wider region.

When folks dared to call out the British, American and Israeli government for their atrocities in Palestine, they were labelled anti-Semitic.

And you also had prominent British jews —Vanessa Feltz, Tracy Obermann and David Baddiel — taking the same view that criticism of Israel was tantamount to anti-Semitism.

It would have been easy to dismiss these individuals, if politicians of all stripes didn’t hold a similar opinion on this fraught subject, too.
