Wars are forever being waged.

Whether it is a war for the control and distribution of precious resources or the acquisition of territory or even ideas for that matter, we are perpetually locked in conflict with each other.

The west and by this I mean the likes of Spain, Portugal, France, The Netherlands, The United Kingdom, Prussia (which later became known as Germany) and the United States of America quickly understood that if it was to stand any chance of survival, it would have to venture beyond the confines of its shores to distant lands.

Portugal had first mover advantage in the 15th century, venturing as far as Kongo and establishing trade ties with the local monarch.

In the area known as Ghana today, it stumbled on vast quantities of gold and this transformed the fortunes of this tiny nation state on the Iberian peninsula.

The Dutch didn’t waste anytime in trying to get in on the act and it had absolutely no problems in fighting with the Portuguese on foreign soil for complete control and dominance.

This line of thinking also took them to the Southern hemisphere of the African continent where they would not only subjugate the natives but also…
