Once upon a time, there was a golden era on Medium, when players could post anything and make tens of thousands of dollars.
What was interesting, was that the vast majority of material which was generated back then was actually quite banal but that didn’t matter; all that counted was publishing consistently.
A lot of those writers had first mover advantage, in a space which was starting to catch fire.
When I joined in October 2017, the payment partner program hadn’t begun and those who wrote here did so for the love of the craft and not for the love of money.
But venture capital money changed your beloved platform, creating a Frankinstein monster in the process.
And when writers bragged about what they earned from writing here, folks like me were seriously green with envy, wondering if we could ever publish material which would be several zeros.
For the better part, it didn’t happen.
But what I learnt about the whole process of pressing the publishing button is beyond priceless.
