American Presidents, with vary degrees of success, have usurped the powers of state to achieve their political goals.
Abraham Lincoln suspended Habeas Corpus during the civil war to give the United States, a fighting chance of victory against the secessionists. Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed an executive order to confiscate the gold of everyday Americans under the Emergency Banking Act of 1933.
Richard Milhous Nixon, given the hardcore knave that he was, chose to use the powers of state to spy on the Democrats and the 37th President was forced to resign in disgrace, when his actions came to light.
And today, we have the incumbent using the powers of state, in ways that his predecessors would have shuddered to contemplate.
