If you’re Britain, France or Germany, these aren’t the best of times.

Confronted with the inexorable rise of the Chinese (and Russia), in places you used to refer to as your colonial possessions, must be extremely difficult to come to terms with and this reality is compounded by the fact that they are also grappling with friendly fire from the United States of America.

And it can be argued with some credibility that America’s friendly fire has had a lasting effect on these players, forcing them to look inward like never before, with France getting quite desperate.

Desperate?

Fed up with being remorselessly exploited by its ‘former’ colonial overlord, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Republic (not to be confused with its Southern neighbour, Nigeria) orchestrated a military coup, removing leaders who gave France a carte blanche to pick up precious resources at an absolute pittance.
