Well over a fortnight ago, George Michael would have turned sixty.
And the reminder of this very painful fact, brought sad memories of what might have been at the recently concluded Glastonbury festival when his old mate and the great survivor —Elton John —performed a medley of hit tunes.
While it is no exaggeration to state that Britain’s produced more than its fair share of world beating pop stars —John Lennon, Cliff Richards, Elton John, Paul McCartney and not forgetting Farouk Bulsara who’s more popularly known as Freddie Mercury, the one who really moved the needle was George Michael.
Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou to an immigrant Greek Cypriot father and an English mother, in North London, nothing about his background would indicate the extraordinary talents with which he was imbued.
But this all changed by the time our hero got into high school.
