The 1960 Presidential elections were like no other.

You had a seasoned Republican, who had served at the very highest level going up against a young senator, whose claim to fame was rescuing a number of men during the second world war.

It didn’t matter that the older man sounded better on radio and was much more knowledgeable; the younger man, who was made for television and married a glamourous woman, had charmed vast swathes of the nation.

And it still wasn’t enough.

Joseph P. Kennedy Sr did all that he could in ensuring that his son emerged victorious at the polls and the means by which this was done remains the subject of vast numbers of books, till this very day.

But back to the subject of this article.

What if Richard Nixon had won the 1960 elections?

He would have been stepping into the role of President after having served as Vice to Dwight Eisenhower in the previous eight years.

There would have been continuity on a number of issues such as the shoring up of the vanquished German and Japanese economies and there would have been ample support for the state of Israel against its…
