Has Rupert Murdoch Had Enough of Donald Trump?
A few changes might be imminent..
That Rupert Murdoch is the most powerful man in media isn’t in question.
That Murdoch’s outsize influence has destroyed our democracy beyond all recognition isn’t at all being disputed.
And to those who pay very close attention, they will appreciate that no one comes close to wielding the power that the ex-Australian, ex-Brit and ex-human wields over our polity on both sides of the Atlantic.
This was true when Reagan and Thatcher made a bid for the top jobs in their respective countries and this was also reinforced with the election victory of Tony Blair in the 1990s. His powers weren’t dented by the extraordinary revelations that his organization had engaged in a series of high profile phone hacking incidents in the noughties.
Murdoch’s preeminence was there for all to see when Donald Trump ran for President in 2016.
It didn’t matter that he had said and done some of the most destructive things that anyone running for public office could —when he talked about grabbing women by their private parts or when he openly mocked a disabled individual — all that mattered was Murdoch had his back and thrown the weight of the network behind him.
