Richard Dawkins is Britain’s pre-eminent critic of Christianity.

Anyone who has read the God delusion will readily recognize the points being made here.

At the time, Dawkins’ criticisms were fresh, incisive and actually quite revolutionary: It seemed as though he was prepared to go a few steps further than Christopher Hitchens and eviscerate organized religion.

His line of thinking had such appeal to me not least because I had a visceral hatred of the church but lacked the intellectual gravitas at the time to put my words in a powerfully coherent and cogent way.

Anyone who has read my articles on religion will point to my thoughts on this fractious subject.

The catholic church was the biggest land owner in pre-revolution France and it made a huge amount of money from the trafficking of Africans to the new world.

The protestant church wasn’t far behind its rivals in committing major crimes across the globe.

But that subject isn’t the basis of this article.

The Oxford professor came out a few days ago to describe himself as a cultural Christian.
