It is no mystery that America’s staggering success is inextricably linked to global finance.

While most readers do not need reminding that the oligarchs of the 19th century had put the country on the path to prosperity, its global reach wasn’t truly felt until pillars of the Washington consensus — World Bank, The International Monetary Fund and The World Trade Organization — were built in the aftermath of the second world war.

Manipulating the global order to ensure that the dollar became the reserve currency was an act of genius, which opened up the doors to new industries to take their place at the big table.

And among these new players were Insurance companies.

As pertinent as it is to state that underwriters have always been commercially viable, it is worth mentioning that their profit margins weren’t exactly earth shattering.

And it took a seismic event in the decade of excess to revolutionize their fortunes.

Those who know their history well enough will remember the 1980s during the AIDS epidemic, those who had contracted the much dreaded virus couldn’t get treatment and many were forced to sell…
