Francis Fukuyama, the American academic wrote a well received book titled, the end of history. In it, he expounds on the various political systems that the world has seen and concludes by proclaiming the triumph of liberal democracy over communism, Islamic fundamentalism and everything else.

The late Benjamin Barber, obviously miffed by the success of Huntingdon (Fukuyama’s mentor) and Fukuyama himself, went on to write a book on the subject of America’s dominance of global politics in the 1990s, stating that no two countries which had a McDonald’s restaurant ever went to war with each other. The book’s titled Jihad vs McWorld, which is quite similar to Samuel Huntingdon’s Clash of civilization.

For a long minute in the 1990s, it seemed that these men had a point.

After all, Soviet Russia had collapsed into fragments when its economic model no longer became viable or sustainable. And worse still, it quickly became a basket case when it defaulted on its debts to the international monetary fund (IMF). Russia in 1998, was fundamentally different from the one which could afford to bankroll Cuba and various liberation movements throughout Africa in the 1960s, 70s and 80s.
