Revisiting my previous piece…

Thomas Carlyle isn’t one of my favourite writers.

Anyone who has read Sartor Resartus or tailor re-tailored, for those who do not know any Latin, On Heroes, Hero-Worship and The Heroic in Society and Past and Present, will have noticed Carlyle’s tendency to veer from one extreme of the ideological spectrum to the next.

Those whose views are skewed to the extreme right, will agree with his biological determinist arguments regarding hierarchies in maintaining order in society and those whose sympathies are to the left will concur with his arguments regarding the moral bankruptcy of capitalism.

The seismic events of the 20th century, certainly vindicated the view that Carlyle did provide inspiration for the likes of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler, who sought to implement the dangerous ideas the Scotchman had written.

Thomas Carlyle had created monsters whose ideas brought the world to the very brink of extinction.

As writers, we fall into the danger of producing material which is embraced and lauded by those whose politics we vehemently and violently disagree with and this is a major problem.
