This is a job for political scholars, some will say.

And others would argue with a degree of credibility that this is also a job for American political buffs, not British Nigerians, who think that reading a number of books make them eminently qualified to determine who sits at top of the pantheon of great American leaders.

But this is a subject matter which this outsider is intent on scrutinizing.

In well over 200 years since American Presidents came into being, we have had an extraordinary cast of characters, ranging from slave holders — George Washington, Thomas Jefferson — to less distinguished individuals such as Grover Cleveland, Herbert Hoover and William Henry Harrison, who spent only nine days on the job before succumbing to illness.

You must know that It is impossible to write about the history of Latin America in the 19th century and not examine the role of the likes of James Monroe, whose time in charge saw America paying a very close attention to what its neighbours in the Southern hemisphere got up to. And it was he who purchased Louisiana from Napoleon in 1803.
