The United Kingdom of Great Britain is in the doldrums right now.
In the grips of a ruinous identity crisis, it plumbed for the worst decision imaginable, when it chose to breakaway from the European Union and isolate itself from the world.
While it is imperative to state that the malaise at the heart of the polity has been in the making since the immediate aftermath of the second world war, it is worth emphasizing that we have never had it so bad.
And Brexit is the reason why it is near impossible to believe that this small island in Northern Europe governed the world for a considerable amount of time in previous centuries.
Seriously?
Yes.
Private capitalists with the backing of the crown, were the ones who dared to venture out of the shores of the English isles to seek their fortunes in far flung parts of the world.
Firms such as Plymouth and London companies, The British East India, Royal Niger Company, UAC (which is still in operation till this very day) John Holt, Barclays, Lloyds became the means through which commodities were extracted from the earth and a select few became fabulously wealthy.
