You are right. But it must be said that the war has become intractable and there are no easy outcomes for both sides.

But Russia is destroying itself in fighting a war that it has failed to decisively win, thus far.

From the American standpoint, Ukraine is collateral damage, and an opportunity to properly assess Russia.

Even if Russia captured Maripol and Donbass, it still loses.

I must say that what's going on is scary, all round.
