With one son’s misdeeds and the other’s deafening silence, his legacy has been irrevocably damaged.

As with most people, I am drawn to great speeches and highly charismatic politicians. And if you like me remember the 1980s, as young as I was then, one guy stood out among the Democrats for his legendary ability with words and much more to the point — his ability to work the audience.

His name was Mario Cuomo.

And the great speech was the one delivered at the Democratic convention in 1984 titled: “ A Tale of two cities”, in which he decried the state of the nation under Reagan’s leadership and spoke directly to those who were at the receiving end of the brutal economic policy of the Republicans.

His exceptional performance at the 84 convention made him favourite for the Democratic nomination in 88 and 92, but for some reason, he chose not to run for President.

Mario Cuomo was governor of the state of New York from 1983 to 1995. Even though I knew so little about his policy successes or failures, his demeanor…
