For those who aren’t too familiar with my articles here, you must know that I was a member of the Conservative and unionist party in my early twenties.
Yes, I said it.
Long before Sunak, Braverman and Kwarteng became regulars at party conferences, I was already embedded to the movement, pushing to be selected as a parliamentary candidate for a marginal seat in London.
But that was a long time ago.
I had an epiphany and my politics moved sharply to the left and it has stayed there ever since.
But while this author was grappling with his political ideas and life, you had a number of players who had gravitated to extreme conservativism and were making their bid for a seat at the very top of public life in Britain.
And these individuals saw Brexit as a means to an end.
When David Cameron called a referendum in 2015 regarding our membership of the European Union, the former premier really thought that the players on the opposing side had no chance of victory at the polls.
