Yorubas are a very proud people.

And incredibly arrogant too.

We see ourselves as being culturally, intellectually and economically superior to every other Black folk on this planet and by that I refer to Igbos, Hausas, Ghanaians, Jamaicans, African-Americans, Grenadians, Trinidadians, Tanzanians etc.

We point to our acquisition of university degrees and our love of conspicuous consumption as proof of our superiority.

We are profoundly lacking in self-awareness and as obnoxious as they come.

We have absolutely no qualms in selling our brothers and sisters to the highest bidder; we have done so quite aggressively and prolifically in the past and I have no doubt that if the opportunity arose today, we won’t hesitate to trade our people.

While we see ourselves as superior to every other Black folk, we always assume the role of the supplicant, when dealing with Oyinbos (Yoruba for white folk), despite protestations to the contrary.

These days, Yorubas understand little of their traditions and history. They are more than likely to describe themselves as Christian or Muslim.
