How could a talented Black kid stand out in school and go on to become — say — the president of the United States in the absence of meritocracy? Individualism, of course, has always been an aberration for Marxists, who are only capable of reasoning in terms of classes.

Not necessarily true. Plekhanov, Lenin and Trotsky understood the peculiarities of Russian society and simply adapted their marxist philosophies to reflect the society, in which they governed.
