If we examine Bikila’s 1960 Olympic win as a rhetorician would, we look to see what this win communicated, and in its moment, it was a satisfying “middle finger” to the Italians for their invasion of Ethiopia years earlier and for their still holding hostage Ethiopia’s Obelisk of Axum. To the world, Bikila’s win introduced the world to distance runners from Africa, and the win allowed the emperor of Ethiopia access to the Olympic political arena.
