Nation states are vastly diminishing entities in the 21st century.
And this is especially true for a fair number of member states in the European Union and the country of my birth — the United Kingdom.
In seeking answers, we must ask uncomfortable questions as to who and what is responsible for this almighty mess: Is it globalization or the financialization of our economies?
Could it be our lily-livered politicians, who are firmly ensconced in the pockets of their paymasters?
Or could it be the contraption which has changed our lives for ever? And by this I mean social media.
Social Media must shoulder the blame for this interesting state of affairs in today’s interconnected and integrated world.
These digital establishments have, in a very short space of time, amassed extraordinary power by harvesting — and harnessing — the power of data.
Mark Zuckerberg’s billionaire status was enhanced not only by his equity in Facebook, but by his willingness to sell our data to far-right groups and this was evinced by what took place in the run-up to the 2016 American Presidential elections.
