I apologized for taking up the committee’s time and awkwardly got up and left the room. I heard that roomful of men laughing as I walked out into the hall. It still makes me cringe. I wanted to stomp back in and ask them which ones had been a police chief or a mayor — because that and several advanced classes on leadership and teamwork was how I got my leadership skills. But I didn’t. My face was burning with embarrassment, and as much as I wanted to tell someone off, I wanted more to get to my room and hide.
