…nction, like it or not, of “whiteness.” That doesn’t mean being a “white person.” When I was a kid, Eastern Europeans weren’t “white,” which mystified the rest of us “brown” people, because they sure looked like all the other “white” people to us. What they didn’t have was cultural capital, legitimacy, credibility, all of which are wrapped up in that term.
