2024 has proved to be quite an exceptional year.

It has produced twists and turns that the finest writer would have had great difficulty in conjuring up.

That the presidential nominee of a major party, survived assassination not once, but twice to win the biggest prize of them all, certainly wasn’t on our radar.

Our cynicism would have made it impossible to envisage the International Criminal Court announcing an arrest warrant of the genocidal Israeli Prime Minister and yet it happened.

We had Iran and Israel squaring up to each other, with both sides armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons and the latter forced to back down, was also one event, to which no political commentator was prepared to nail his or her mast.

And no one had on their list of predictions the end of al-Assad dynasty in 2024 and it did unfold right before our very eyes.

The manner in which Bashir al-Assad’s rule of tyranny came to an end will be studied for years to come by students of history.

And yet, paradoxically, the signs were there, but we all failed to take heed.

When the beleaguered Muammar Ghaddafi pointed out to the rest of his contemporaries in the Arab league…
