No, I am not making this up, Britain does seem to be falling apart.

The petrol stations queues are building, some fuel stations are closed due to a chronic shortage of products. Elsewhere, across the many retail outlets in and around the South East, the shelves are practically empty and it doesn’t seem likely that they will be filled anytime soon. The refuse bins are starting to pile up, due to a dearth of HGV drivers in and around the country.

To those of us watching from the sidelines, It is deja vu all over again.

Britain in 2021 feels very much like it did in the late 1970s, when the country declared a three day week for electricity supply, when it was in the grips of the trade unions, when there was quite a bit of fuel scarcity and when it was so broke that it went begging to the IMF, so much so that it was given the sobriquet: “The sick man of Europe”.

Certainly this is the view on the continent, as evinced by the newspapers from across the continent.
