To the new writers trying to make a name for themselves, it’s the best thing ever.

If I had a pound for the numbers of articles that I read on this platform, in the last few days bemoaning the closure of the ascent publication, I’d be fabulously wealthy.

But for all budding writers on this space, looking to carve a niche for themselves, the decision to close another ‘big pub’ is actually heaven sent.

Why?

Because these ‘big publications’ have become too complacent, too hubristic, too fat and way too inebriated over the course of their existence on this page. As opposed to promoting highly qualitative work, they seemed to exist to serve the whims and caprices of the established players on Medium.

Four months ago, I wrote an article titled: “ Time to Smash the hold that big writers and big publications have on medium”. In this post, I stated that the monopolistic hold of these over bloated outfits was impedimental to the rise of a new generation of writers looking to make a name for themselves in this space.
