Daniel Hannan is not a household name in Britain or anywhere else for that matter.
In British political circles, however, it is a completely different story. The former MEP ( Member of European Parliament) is widely recognized for the pivotal role that he played in bringing Brexit to life.
Long before Boris Johnson, Nigel Farrage and Jacob Rees-Mogg got on the bandwagon and became evangelical about Britain leaving the European Union, Daniel Hannan was already a veteran on working overtime to make the case for Brexit.
It is no exaggeration to state that Brexit, as we know it, was his brainchild.
And you could argue with a degree of credibility that this world view was forged in his childhood, growing up in South America.
Daniel Hannan was born to middle aged parents in far away Peru, in South America.
As with Brits living in settler colonies across Asia and Africa, the Hannans were part of a well to do expat community in the Southern hemisphere. To these folks, Britain of the 1970s was a wasteland; a country on its very last lap. Suffice it to say that this view shaped chief architect of Brexit in ways that we are coming to terms with in 2022.
By the time our man arrived at Oxford in 1990, he had something of a head start in comparison to his contemporaries who weren’t as worldly, politically sophisticated and well read.
It was during his time at university that he started the various platforms such as the European Research Group (ERG), which took on a life of its own in the following decades.
Understanding the thinking behind the Overton window is to fully grasp the success that the likes of ERG and the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) were to have in the run up to the 2016 referendum.
For Daniel Hannan, the Yes vote of the 2016 referendum was the culmination of three decades of activism and campaigning.
