The Coronation: Why Are We Paying For Charles’s Vanity Project?

There should be blood on the streets instead…

The Regal Charles III with jewels stolen from South Africa and India

Tomorrow, the world’s attention will be on the capital city of the United Kingdom.

Life, as we know it, will ground to a halt, in order for the most ancient of rituals to take place.

The diamond encrusted crown, which was stolen from India and South Africa will be displayed in all of its glory and placed on the head of Charles III as he takes the oath of office to defend the profoundly corrupt and morally bankrupt institution of the British monarchy.

But that isn’t the story.

The real story is of the United Kingdom in 2023 being more impoverished than it has ever been in recent history.

The story of the proliferation of food banks, to serve those who have to choose between heating and eating; and those who simply cannot afford to live and rent in London.

Life in Brexit Britain is a million miles away from what it used to be.

When Elizabeth II was coronated in 1953, Britain had emerged from the second world war as a diminished force, with India and Pakistan becoming independent nation-states, the founding of the National Health Service and Winston Churchill taking over from Clement Atlee’s exhausted Labour party.

Even though Britain’s economy was in the doldrums back then, the war was something of a great leveler and there was the impression that life was harsh for the poor as it was for the wealthiest in British society in the 1950s.

There is no such illusion today.

Brexit has wrecked the British economy beyond all imagination; the cost of living has all but destroyed the collective wealth of those at the bottom of the food chain, with far too many folks destitute than ever today.

And yet we are meant to be celebrating the coronation of King Charles III and what’s more we —the British people —are footing the bill for this pointless…
