We hate the poor.

And we aren’t even subtle about it.

We think that this group of individuals are undeserving of sympathy and support from the wealthiest governments in the history of humankind.

And here’s the thing: hatred of the poor isn’t restricted to the 1percent; it cuts across all racial and socio-economic groups — and yes, that includes the poor themselves.

In The United States of America, the white trash phenomenon is used to describe the ranks of those at the very bottom of the food chain. They are quite visible, owing to the fact that they belong to the majority tribe.

And here in Britain, documentaries, reality TV shows and satire were generated to mock the least economically empowered in society to the point of delirium and this really became a thing in the 1990s and noughties.

For a season, the most popular comedy show was Little Britain, and its most notable sketches were the ones which poked fun at the overweight white woman with multiple children and the Black boyfriend in their deprived council estate.

And what about the poor themselves?
