A victim of a Faustian pact or a narcissistic disorder?

It was only a few years ago that the multi-award winning rapper, Kanye West was in huge debt.

Our man was in the red by 53 million dollars and actually reached out to Mark Zuckerberg for help in dealing with his financial situation.

And yet, in six extraordinary years, West has gone from being in the red to being a billionaire several times over.

But the manner in which it was done, does leave quite a bitter taste in the mouths of millions of people across the Atlantic.

Millions of Black people.

As Americans and the rest of the world were coming to terms with the election of Donald Trump, there were a few people who knew that an opportunity of a lifetime had dropped on their laps.

Steve Harvey and Jim Brown had gone to the Trump towers to be seen with the now ex-president.

But the one figure which got the rest of the world talking was Kanye West.

And the one with whom Trump was especially proud of being photographed.

Given West’s antecedents, it isn’t hard to see why.

Here was the son of a Black Panther and a college professor who was as grounded in all things Black as you can find and the very same figure who famously called out a Republican President for failing to address the fall out from hurricane Katrina, when thousands of Black folk had been made destitute by the extreme weather situation in 2005.

West was loud, charismatic and knew how to work a crowd.

But how on earth did he go from a conscious rapper to one who was happy to embrace a nakedly racist politician?

Was it the loss of his mother, the one person who knew him better than most and kept him grounded through the years?

Was it his marriage to the Kardashian family, a clan that is so driven to monetize everything that crawls on the face of this planet?

Or was it due to a Faustian bargain that was struck with the devil, which meant that his soul was forever in the hands of the lawless one if he got to make huge sums of money?
