The Stranglehold of Patriarchy Must Be Smashed Globally
Whether it’s Afghanistan, Russia, Britain or the United States, it’s open season on women and women’s rights.
2021 has been an extraordinarily bad year for women’s rights and women.
In Afghanistan, the Taliban roared back into life, overthrowing the American backed government. No sooner had our militant friends returned than they began to roll back the gains of the last twenty years, with girls and women being withdrawn from schools and active participation in public life.
In Britain, Sarah Everard was raped and murdered by a serving police officer, who had carefully cooked up an elaborate cover story to carry out his heinous crime. What was especially galling about this episode wasn’t the fact that at the wake held for the late Ms. Everard, the police came out in full force, attacking women who dared to publicly protest the killing of an innocent citizen but that male colleagues of Wayne Couzens came out in large numbers to support their fellow officer. It was as though Ms. Everard committed the crime of being a woman.
