The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, that little country in Northern Europe, which has given the world so many wonderful things such as afternoon tea, association football or soccer to Americans, James Bond, William Shakespeare, the English Language and the United States of America is at death’s door.

Never did I think that I would write this in my lifetime, but the country of my birth is unravelling at an extraordinary pace.

And I am left scratching my head wondering how we got here.

Growing up, we were taught about the third Reich and its heinous crime against humanity.

We learnt about Germany’s economic woes in the aftermath of the first world war, which led to the collapse of Weimar republic and the ensuing hyperinflation, which gave rise to Adolf Hitler.

We also learnt about the poisonous anti-semitism which was at the heart of Hitler’s campaign or you could say propaganda, which singled out a group of people and made them the scapegoats for everything that had gone wrong in the country.

By the time the second world war ended in 1945, 85 million people had perished, of whom 6 million were Jews.
