The World’s Greatest Ever Propaganda Machine Is Set For a Rebrand (Meta)
Facebook is set to change its name, next week.
This comes off the back of the unusual developments in the last few months and years in which the organization’s activities have come under intense scrutiny from social media ethicists and law makers from around the world.
And perhaps more than anything else, these imminent changes owe everything to the extraordinary testimony given by its ex-employee, Frances Haugen, to American legislators a few weeks ago.
As a quick reminder to readers, Ms. Haugen’s testimony started with a brief introduction
I’m here today because I believe Facebook’s products harm children, stoke division and weaken our democracy. The company’s leadership knows how to make Facebook and Instagram safer, but won’t make the necessary changes because they have put their astronomical profits before people.” She added that Facebook was “buying its profits with our safety”. In 2020, Facebook reported a net income — a US measure of profit — of more than $29bn (£21bn).
