Glasgow is dripping in deprivation and I have no doubt that it would have been much worse, if she grew up in the 70s and 80s. But the opportunities of attending some of the best universities in Scotland to escape the fate of being working class, would have been available to her.
As much as you may not want to demonize every man for the evils of patriarchy, it is pertinent to point out that every white male who is out there benefits from an unequal system, however qualified or badly qualified he is.
This is what the Black writers are saying. Not all whites are racist, but there's work that needs to be done by whites in dismantling the current infrastructure that is profoundly skewed to whites than blacks.
