It was only thanks to the intervention of the sole white woman philosophy lecturer in the department (of Irish heritage) who with the backing of the Head of the Department (a white man of working class origins) that I was handed a third class degree. Quite bewildered about all the furore, I went to see my young philosophy teacher. (She was only some 13 years older than me). It was her first job in academia after completing her Phd.
