Could this spell the end of Europe as we know it ?

It is almost impossible to believe that Trump was inaugurated only four weeks ago.

Because in such a short space of time, the man has set about destroying the framework, which was put together by the likes of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

What gave Pax Americana profound legitimacy in Europe was the degree to which it was prepared to ensure that genocidal fascism and totalitarian communism was pushed back throughout the continent.

Its mixed success — its failure to stand for the Hungarians in 1956, who fought against communism — might have left a bitter taste in the mouths of a generation of leftists, America was on the whole seen as a beacon for freedom of speech in Europe.

And while we can and should debate the means through which was done —by overthrowing the communists in Italy in 1948 and stationing troops in Germany — America took its commitment to its version of democracy, quite seriously.

Those with some knowledge of history will point to the likes of JFK, who went to Berlin to deliver a groundbreaking speech, siding with those who were…
