Posterity will judge Volodymyr Zelenskyy quite harshly.

Far more harshly than every one of his predecessors since the USSR splintered into independent states in 1991.

And yes, the list of predecessors include the likes of Viktor Yushchenko, Viktor Yanukovych, Oleksandr Turchynov and Petro Poroshenko.

Prior to the formal invasion and declaration of war on Ukraine in February 2022, this highly strategic nation-state was caught in the middle between the West and Russia as its leaders oscillated between its former colonial master and Uncle Sam.

The orange revolution of 2004–05, was an expression of elements within the Ukrainian political class, who sought closer ties with the United States and Yanukovych’s election in 2010 was confirmation of the pro-Russian sections within the polity.

That these factions have been in conflict with each other isn’t breaking news, but what’s of great importance is the extent to which global peace and stability have been undermined by this interminable war between neighbours.
