It is widely accepted that the 20th century was the bloodiest in the history of mankind.

And with good reason too.

When you add up the numbers of those who died in the Russo-Japanese war of 1905, the First World War of 1914–1918, the Russian revolution, Second World War of 1939–1945 and every other war (Korean, Vietnam, Algeria v France, Russia in Afghanistan) which took place right down to the final two at the very end of the century —the Bosnian and Kosovan wars, it is abundantly clear that our genocidal impulses were at their very worst in the 1900s.

But we can’t analyze the extraordinary events of the twentieth century without having a bit of perspective and context and this is where the bible comes into play.

Anyone who has read the old testament will readily appreciate that it was mainly characterized by a huge degree of ethnic cleansing and genocide.
