From time to time, I try to cast a retrospective take on my previous articles and given the state of our world in 2024, it is worth doing so.

When I wrote about the lurch of Europe’s leading nations to the far right, folks of a moderate and centrist disposition would have baulked at the tone of my piece.

But things are turning out exactly how I suggested.

France has practically imploded, the war in Ukraine is showing absolutely no signs of abating and we have been sucked into the Gaza genocide.

Yesterday, general elections were held in Spain.

As expected, immigration was expected to be high on the agenda, with the far right seeking to make political capital out of those who have fled their homelands to seek refuge in Europe.

The results, thus far, showed that the Spanish Conservatives had won the greatest number of seats along with their extreme right coalition partners but it might not be enough to form a government.

But the Spaniards aren’t alone here.
