What If Marie Le Pen Wins The French Presidential Election?
What would it mean for France to have an anti-Semitic, Islamophobic and racist politician in charge?
Contrary to what the Cognoscenti and everyone else would have you believe, democracy is on life support throughout the world. From America, where leading Republicans have expressed sympathy for the murderous Putin to India, where Hindu fundamentalists are slaughtering Muslims and the government of the day turns a blind eye, these are truly precarious times for electoral governments.
Europe, which prides itself on giving the rest of the world civilization, philosophy, the market economy and democracy itself, is caught between its tragic, deadly past and an profoundly uncertain future.
When I write of a tragic past, I refer to the likes of General Franco of Spain, who ruled with an iron fist for well over forty years, with the support of Great Britain and the United States of America.
In keeping with the theme of a tragic past, we also cannot forget Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler, whose disregard for democracy brought the world to the very brink of destruction in the early twentieth century when 80 million people perished, including 6 million Jewish people who were sent to the gas chamber at Auschwitz.
