What’s The Point of The Monarchy In The 21st Century?
A case for a revolution in our time.
The entire occasion was a cringe-fest.
Watching Charles with his former mistress, now rehabilitated as a proper wife, riding in their golden carriage to Westminster Abbey to get crowned by the minions from the church of England was an interesting sight to behold.
And one which was defined by incongruity and anachronism from the very start to the end. Ancient rituals and traditions were resurrected for an event which is completely out of step in today’s world.
As determined as the inclement weather was to rain (literally) on Charles’s parade, the coronation went ahead with the usual pomp and pageantry which we have come to expect from the royal family.
And judging by the reaction of Liverpool supporters at their game against Brentford on their home turf and the protesters who were arrested and had their placards taken away from them, it is no exaggeration to state that a sizeable chunk of the British people have no love for the royal family and the monarchy.
Which is precisely why we must ask, what is the point of the monarchy in the 21st century?
